Golden Key's "Go Green" Campaign

Dear Golden Key members,

For all of you interested in the Go Green Campaign, I have an update for you. We have learned that another group on campus has been pursuing a campus recycling program. This group is called the Environmental Action Club (EAC). We have decided to join efforts with this group in getting a recycling program and other green efforts going on campus. Erica, a member of EAC, spoke at our Golden Key meeting last Saturday to update us on what has been going on environmentally at the U of M.

"Last year, we successfully ran a campaign to get the students to voluntarily raise their fees in order to purchase clean, renewable energy from the TVA green power switch program and establish funds for on campus sustainability projects like recycling." - U of M EAC (from their facebook page)

Therefore, we now have the money to get a recycling program going. However, we first must decide exactly how to allocate that money and to get policies in place. To do this, the University has a Sustainability Committee made up of students, faculty, and staff of the U of M. Their goal is to make our campus more environmentally sustainable and efficient. They had a meeting today which a few members of the EAC were allowed to attend.

The EAC is having their first meeting of the semester this Friday, February 1st at 2pm. The meeting will be held in Room 124, Ellington Hall. Golden Key members are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

In addition to attending this meeting, I believe the best way for us to remain updated on these issues is to join the U of M EAC group on facebook. In doing so, you will receive update messages and can check the group's site for updates as well.

Additonally, if you would like to remain updated, to join EAC, or just to discuss the issues with Erica, her e-mail address is elchrstn@memphis.edu and her phone number is (615) 423-7967. She is very passionate about making our campus green and she would love to hear from you and know that you are interested as well. Please e-mail her if you would like to remain updated on these issues so she can put you on her list.

We need the help and voice of everyone who is willing to support this cause. The Sustainability Committee needs to hear a strong student voice addressing these environmental issues. Please let me or Erica know if you have any questions or if you would like to be put on the mailing list to be updated about the Go Green Campaign as things progress.

Thank you!
